Top 10 Places to Visit In Tasmania

Are you considering a visit to Australia? If so, think about including Tasmania in your travel plans, especially if you’re already planning a trip to Melbourne! You can combine the trip with visiting both Melbourne and Tasmania. From Melbourne, it’s just a short one-hour flight, or for a more adventurous and scenic journey, you can take the Spirit of Tasmania ferry and bring your car along for the ride.

Tasmania offers a diverse array of experiences, ranging from unspoiled natural beauty to charming towns, making it an ideal addition to your Australian adventure. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a hiking aficionado, a waterfall seeker, or simply drawn to the stunning coastline, Tasmania has it all. Let’s dive in!

1. Cradle Mountain

To visit the majestic Cradle Mountain, be sure to obtain a National Parks Pass (you can conveniently purchase it in advance on the official website here). While there are numerous hiking routes available, I recommend starting with the iconic three-hour Dove Lake Circuit. It’s an excellent choice for those who want to fully immerse themselves in the stunning surroundings at a leisurely pace. If you’re up for a more challenging adventure, there are other options apart from the Dove Lake Circuit, such as exploring Hanson’s Peak and Marion’s Lookout. These alternatives promise equally breathtaking views and memorable experiences. And here’s a local tip: if you disembark at Ronny Creek station and follow the path, you’re almost guaranteed to spot a wild wombat along the way. I’ve personally seen them every time I’ve visited!

2. Mount Wellington

While planning your visit to Mount Wellington, keep in mind that the mountain can sometimes be shrouded in clouds. To fully appreciate its breathtaking views of Hobart and the surrounding landscape, it’s best to schedule your visit on a clear and sunny day. Exploring Mount Wellington is a treat for nature enthusiasts. You have the option to embark on some shorter hikes that offer unique perspectives of the area, or you can opt for the convenience of driving all the way up to the mountain peak. Regardless of your choice, the view from the summit is nothing short of spectacular, providing an unforgettable panorama of Hobart and its stunning surroundings.

3. Maria Island

For an immersive wilderness experience on Maria Island, make sure to plan ahead by booking your ferry tickets in advance. Additionally, don’t forget to acquire a National Park Pass, which is essential for your visit to this natural paradise. Once on the island, consider the unique experience of camping in its pristine wilderness or staying in the historic penitentiary. Maria Island is known for its thriving population of wombats, with sightings more common during the winter months when these furry creatures seek refuge from the heat. And if you are lucky, you may encounter a Tasmanian Devil during your visit — I personally saw one during my time on the island!

4. Port Arthur

Port Arthur’s old place is a fascinating spot with lots to see and do. You can learn about Australia’s history when it was a place for prisoners, check out the old buildings and broken walls, and discover what life was like for the people who used to live here. Friendly guides can tell you more, and you can also walk around pretty gardens and paths. If you like spooky stories, there are tours about ghosts, and you can even take a boat ride on the water to see the place from a different angle. Port Arthur has something for everyone, especially if you’re interested in history and like to explore interesting places. You can purchase your tickets here

5. Stanley – The Nut

Besides the beautiful hike up “The Nut,” the town of Stanley is a charming spot to wander around. If you’re feeling fit, the zigzag path to the top only takes about 5 minutes and treats you to stunning views of the area. But, if you prefer an easier ride, there’s another option. You can hop on the chairlift, which will whisk you up to the summit with ease, offering equally breathtaking vistas. Stanley truly has something for everyone, whether you’re up for a quick hike or a relaxing chairlift adventure.

Here are the prices as per 8th Oct 2023, and you can purchase the chairlift tickets on site.

6. Penguin

Penguin is often celebrated as one of Tasmania’s cosiest towns. Its friendly residents love to decorate the town’s penguin statue (affectionately known as The Big Penguin), adding to its charm. While you’re here, don’t miss a visit to the Letterbox Cafe for a delightful cup of their top-notch coffee. Taking a leisurely walk along the coastline is also a must, and make sure to include a stop at the Penguin Pantry to round out your Penguin experience. This town offers a perfect blend of warmth, creativity, and coastal beauty that you won’t want to miss.

7. Wineglass Bay

As you explore Wineglass Bay, keep in mind that the entire east coast of Tasmania is a picturesque paradise waiting to be discovered. Take your time to soak in the coastal beauty and marvel at the natural wonders all around you. And if you’re a fan of seafood, don’t forget to indulge in some delicious oysters, a regional specialty that you can savour in this delightful part of Tasmania.

If you find yourself in Hobart on a Saturday, you’re in for a treat at the renowned Salamanca Market. This vibrant market is a treasure trove of artisanal crafts, local produce, and unique souvenirs, making it a must-visit. But Hobart has even more to offer. Hobart is a city that seamlessly blends history, art, and culinary delights, promising a memorable experience for all who visit.

9. Launceston

While you’re in Launceston, be sure to explore Grindelwald, a charming Swiss-inspired village that promises a picturesque setting with serene lakes and alpine-inspired architecture. You can even add a touch of fun and adventure by trying your hand at mini-golf in this delightful spot. Within Launceston itself, the stunning Cataract Gorge is a must-visit natural wonder just a stone’s throw from the city centre. Additionally, make time for a visit to the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (with free entry!), offering diverse art and history exhibits. If you’re a wine enthusiast, take a short drive to the nearby Tamar Valley wine region for wine tasting and scenic vineyard views. Launceston has it all, whether you seek natural beauty, cultural experiences, or culinary delights, making it a well-rounded destination worth exploring.

10. Queenstown

When you find yourself in Queenstown, make sure to drop by the Tracks Cafe for a delightful cup of coffee, a perfect pick-me-up. But Queenstown has more to offer beyond coffee. Take the time to visit the Iron Blow Lookout, where you can gain a deeper appreciation for the town’s rich mining history as you take in sweeping views of the dramatic landscape. Queenstown also serves as a gateway to the West Coast Wilderness Railway, an iconic journey through Tasmania’s wilderness that combines history, adventure, and stunning scenery. For those seeking outdoor thrills, explore the nearby Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, home to rugged landscapes, rainforests, and epic hiking trails. Queenstown’s unique blend of history and natural beauty makes it an ideal starting point for many unforgettable adventures in this part of Tasmania.
